Today wasn't one of Monique's better days, though in truth it really started yesterday. During a routine test they found that her red blood cell count was low - the staff informed us this is mostly likely because her body can't keep up with her rate of growth and certainly would explain why she was not very wakeful the last couple of days. Since they still had blood left from the original donor pack that they used when she was born they decided to give her a transfusion. The nurse was having a little trouble getting the IV in place. Before she got it, however, she was informed that they were coming up to do an eye exam. Amy and I had left before the exam was done and the transfusion finally completed, but it had become a busy day for Monique.
Today she was more active, but her number of alarms had gone back up (she had had 6 by the time we left). The nurse told us that it was not surprising for a baby to have increased alarms after an eye exam - the exam isn't the friendliest and the eye drops are bothersome. Additionally there was swelling above her left eye that is most likely from the infusion, but it was still a little alarming for us.
